Q: What does the Ecodesign legislation mean for me?

A: If you commission or install a
new small, medium or large power transformer on or after July 1,
2015, it must legally comply with
the EU Commission Ecodesign requirements. The majority of transformers currently on the market do not comply.

Q: When is the best time to commission a new transformer - should I wait until after July 2015 or act now?

A: Because the combined losses it offers are lower than those specified by the new legislation, the Bowers BEST range could be a more economical and efficient option if you operate your transformer at a load of 35% or more. Commissioning a Bowers BEST unit before July 1, 2015, could not only save you money initially, but in the long-term. The Bowers team can help you assess the options, according to
your use, budget, and energy-saving targets.

Q: Why should I choose Bowers over another transformer manufacturer?

A: Bowers Electricals designs and manufactures here in the UK, supporting local businesses while maintaining a competitive edge against manufacturers who import their products from outside Europe. Bowers
is a family-owned business that prides itself on offering excellent customer service while being noted for the ability and flexibility to provide top-quality, bespoke engineering solutions for each client. With Bowers you can not only
be confident of getting the best value for money but of finding the solution you need – not one you have to work around.

Q: I want amorphous - does Bowers offer an amorphous range?

A: Bowers Electricals is developing a range of

transformers that will meet the stricter requirements of the second phase of Ecodesign legislation, due to come into force in 2021.
In the meantime, Bowers can achieve Tier 1 requirements using the best available core steel technology – keeping cost and size to a minimum. Amorphous core transformers are physically much larger, more expensive and generate significantly higher noise pollution than conventional steel transformers. A study undertaken by members of the Cigrè A2 committee indicates that this increase could be as much as 5dBW(A).
Amorphous is commonly associated with Tier 2 Ecodesign requirements but the EC has committed to reviewing the regulation no later than three years after its entry into force. If minimum values of peak efficiency replace fixed losses the goal posts may move again.
